Shelley Schell, chief financial officer stated in a SooToday article that council will have the final word on how to interpret the recent changed to the Municipal Act regarding vacant property tax.

BIA manager Josh Ingram said that he would like to see a hybrid of this tax. Many BIA’s across Ontario currently have rebates available to property owners that allow tourism, education or BIA’s storefront availability a few months out of the year, creating a partnership and good use of the building.

Instead of being a rebate for vacant properties, we are hoping to see those business or building owners who have vacant properties to allow tourism or education to use those storefronts for a very minimal amount of time throughout the year to edify and assist the community with engagement.

-Josh Ingram

The overall idea would be to help the community as well as end up with something beneficial in your pocket at the end of the year.
