The Downtown Association (DTA) and the Millworks Centre for Entrepreneurship Celebrates over $100,000 in Digital Main Street Grants

Sault Ste. Marie’s Downtown Association (DTA) and the Millworks Centre for Entrepreneurship are pleased to announce that more than $100,000 has been granted to local businesses through the Digital Main Street (DMS) Digital Transformation Grant (DTG) Program. The Sault Ste. Marie’s DMS program has been offering free digital support to brick-and-mortar small businesses through its Digital Service Squad (DSS) since August 2022. In just 12 months, Rachel Silva and Grace Swain of the DSS have helped over 55 local small businesses receive grant funding through the program, bringing over $100,000 into our community.

The DTG program provides financial support to brick-and-mortar small businesses, enabling them to invest $2,500 into their website, digital marketing, digital training, software and hardware (up to $1000). The DTG application portal is open until September 30, 2023 (or until grant funds are fully exhausted).

In celebration of the more than $100,000 that our DSS has helped Sault Ste. Marie businesses to access, we will be holding a “Grant Countdown Party” on August 23, 2023 at 7 p.m. at Loplops. Snacks will be provided by Broers Jansen, Peace and Sunset Noodle House.

We will have representatives from Marketing Therapy, Sootoday.com, Algoma Business Computers, as well as other local business people who have accessed the grant and know the benefits of working with the Digital Service Squad. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. followed by a small business speed dating session at 7 p.m.

Throughout the evening, there will be giveaways for the attendees including a selfie stick, a six-week social campaign ready to schedule, and four branded templates with Canva. Entertainment will also be provided by the Myld Stallyns, with special guest Sarah Skagen. Music will start at 9:30 p.m.

If you want to explore how this $2,500 DMS grant can work for your business and meet local digital vendors who can help you choose the right path, email dms.dta@gmai.com for your invite to register, at no cost. Please come and join us in celebrating and learning how you can access additional support to receive this funding for your business.

“The Digital Main Street Digital Transformation Grant program is a vitally important and immensely valuable resource for small businesses,” says Kay Matthews, Executive Director, OBIAA. “We join Sault Ste. Marie in celebrating the success of the program that continues to provide their local businesses with the knowledge, resources, and training to revitalize their operations with an expanded digital presence.”

“Seeing the continued impact of this program, especially in Northern Ontario speaks volumes to businesses realizing the importance of continued adoption of digital for their business” adds John Kiru, Executive Director of TABIA. “We look forward to celebrating this milestone with the team in Sault Ste. Marie and look forward to continuing our great work together in the region”.

With an investment from Ontario’s Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, and administered by the Ontario BIA Association (OBIAA), in partnership with the Toronto Association of BIAs (TABIA), the DTG program has empowered Sault Ste. Marie businesses to embrace digital tools and technologies. Digital Service Squads are the cornerstone of DMS, with trained specialists, such as Rachel and Grace, who meet with brick-and-mortar small businesses, at no cost, to help them complete an online assessment and to introduce them to online training modules designed to build their digital knowledge and skills. Based out of the DTA office, the Sault Ste. Marie Squad hosts workshops, drop-ins and provides one-on-one training for small brick-and-mortar businesses located anywhere in Sault Ste Marie.

About: The Bon Soo Winter Carnival is the Soo’s most iconic winter festival.  60 years ago the festival began in an effort to bring some joy during the dark, cold winter months.  The festival over those years has morphed from a community wide celebrated event to a much smaller, struggling winter festival.  The reasons are many as to why, however we believe that the Carnival is worth salvaging and returning back to its former glory.  In the fall of 2022, the Tourism Sault Ste. Marie Board of Directors invested $75,000 into the revitalization of the Winter Carnival.

Naloxone Kit + Training Requirements in at-risk Businesses

Please read the details below to determine if your business is required.

Starting June 1, 2023, employers must provide naloxone in the workplace if
certain circumstances described in the Occupational Health and Safety Act apply. For a limited time, those employers can get free naloxone training and nasal spray naloxone kits through Ontario’s Workplace Naloxone Program.

Naloxone (pronounced na-LOX-own) is a drug that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Opioids are drugs that are prescribed by a medical practitioner to treat pain. However, opioids are also used recreationally. Some commonly used opioids include:

morphine

heroin

oxycodone

fentanyl

codeine

hydromorphone

While opioids can be an effective part of pain management for medically supervised patients, opioid addiction and overdose are a significant challenge in Ontario.

Naloxone only reverses overdoses from opioids. It will not reverse overdoses from other kinds of drugs, such as benzodiazepines or stimulants like cocaine and amphetamines.

How employers can determine if they need to provide naloxone in the workplace

As of June 1, 2023, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) will require that naloxone be available in some workplaces in case a worker has an opioid overdose. The requirements do not change how an employer may choose to manage worker impairment from drugs or alcohol that may pose a risk to workplace safety.

Not all employers have to comply with the OHSA requirements to provide naloxone in the workplace.

Employers must provide a naloxone kit when an employer becomes aware, or ought reasonably to be aware, of the following scenarios:

There is a risk of a worker opioid overdose.

There is a risk that the worker overdoses while in a workplace where they perform work for the employer.

The risk is posed by a worker who performs work for the employer.

If all of these scenarios are present, the employer must comply with the OHSA requirements to provide naloxone in the workplace.

If any one of these scenarios are not present, an employer does not need to comply with the OHSA requirements to provide naloxone in the workplace.

"For the OHSA requirements on naloxone to apply to you, the risk of an opioid overdose must be from one of your workers at your workplace. The OHSA requirements on naloxone do not apply to workplaces where the risk of an opioid overdose is only created by a non-worker, such as a customer, client, patient or other member of the public.

A customer opioid overdose occurring in your workplace does not, alone, indicate that you may need to provide a naloxone kit in your workplace under the OHSA."

The Digital Transformation Grant portal is reopening through Digital Main Street on January 16th.  The grant funds from the original run were not expended so this round is still called 4.0 and has the same requirements.

Brick and Mortar businesses with 50 employees or less and an HST number can apply for the $2500 grant to spend on any new digital projects involving Digital Marketing, Software, Website, Digital Training, and  Hardware (up to $1000).

If you know anyone considering applying for the grant they can get ahead of the curve by creating an account with Digital Main Street, watching the 2.5 hours of training videos, and completing the Digital Transformation Plan (attached).  If they complete those three tasks they will be able to submit their application as soon as the grant portal opens on Monday January 16th.

Download the Digital Transformation Plan here.

Canadian Credit Card Class Actions Deadline Extended
If you accepted VISA and Mastercard credit cards between March 23, 2001, and September 2, 2021, you may be eligible to receive money from the class actions settlements.

What is this Class Action about?

Class actions were started in Canada claiming certain banks and Visa and Mastercard (the “Defendants”) conspired to set higher interchange fees and to impose rules restricting merchants’ ability to surcharge or refuse higher cost Visa and Mastercard credit cards.

“Interchange Fees” are fees paid by merchants and collected by banks for transactions involving Visa and/or Mastercard credit cards in Canada.

Settlements totaling $188 CAD million were reached with Capital One, Citigroup, Bank of America, Desjardins, National Bank, Visa, Mastercard, CIBC, Royal Bank, Bank of Montreal, TD Bank, and Bank of Nova Scotia. Additionally, Visa and Mastercard have agreed to modify their no-surcharge rules to allow merchants to surcharge up to a cap, and to ensure this ability to surcharge remains in effect for a minimum of five years.

The settlements have received court approval, and there is a total of $131 CAD million in compensation available for distribution to class members after court-approved deductions (the “Net Settlement Amount”). The Defendants do not admit any wrongdoing or liability. The settlements resolve the class actions.

Who can receive payment under this Class Action?

Settlement Class Members who accepted payments by Visa or Mastercard credit cards as payments for goods or services in Canada between March 23, 2001, and September 2, 2021.

In order to participate in the Settlement, a Class Member must submit a claim no later than:

December 30, 2022
Claim Deadline for Undocumented, Simplified and Documented claims (Deadline extended for all claim types)
