Becoming Calla - "What If..?" Writing Workshop with local author Skye Smith!

  • The Art Hub at Spring 508 Queen St E Sault Ste. Marie, ON, P6A 2A1 Canada (map)

Type A Media is proud to announce the forthcoming launch of local author Skye Smith's debut novella, Becoming Calla, based on the sold out 2023 Fringe North Festival dance theatre show, Calla - also written and performed by Skye Smith.

We invite you to join us on Wednesday, March 5th for a "What If..?" Writing Workshop with local author, Skye Smith. Participants will be guided to explore their deepest secrets under the veil of a new character. Stream of Consciousness and non-linear writing techniques will be explored. Participants will have the chance to share their works and will have the opportunity to discuss the process as a group. Participants are expected to be ready to go at 5pm and stay for the duration if possible, and should bring laptops or notebooks, but implements will also be available.

At the same time, you will have a second opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of Calla with interactive displays, including art from the award-winning Fringe North performance.

This is a by-donation event. Presales will also still be open for the very short-run, handcrafted Limited Edition hardcover coffee table book Becoming Calla (it's a breathtaking work of art itself!)

Please note: Becoming Calla explores mature themes and is intended for an adult audience.

Advance praise for Becoming Calla:

“Becoming Calla” casts a spell. Somehow, it feels cinematic and intensely personal at the same time. At times it feels like a backstage pass to a world I don’t know, but then the emotional honesty resonates and creates a connection that feels universal. I planned to savor “Becoming Calla” one chapter at a time but it reached into my chest and pulled me through the whole ride. It was less a journal on which to meditate and more of an event, a happening, something to experience first and digest afterward. I gasped, I laughed. Sometimes on the same page. Beautiful, brave or brazen, bare. I couldn’t put it down.

- Jacob Maybe, Writer & Playwright

Skye Smith's Becoming Calla is a raw and unsettling debut novella about a young woman's struggle with mental health and an abusive relationship with a drug dealer. At times I wanted to yell at Calla; at others, to give her a hug. Smith's novel offers a poignant exploration of the idea that healing is not only about overcoming the things that have happened to us, but also about confronting the impact of our own choices. Becoming Calla is a complex female story about the possibility of growth and self-discovery, even while bearing the scars of our herstories.

- Emma L.R. Hogg, Writer & Playwright

Raw. Real. Poignant. (Smith) cleverly wove together laughable moments with gut punches and tears. This story is the story of all women. A must read.
