Re-Emergence Paint Night with Patrick Hunter

Re-Emergence Tour: Celebrating 2SLGBTQIA+ Activism and Milestones

Sault Ste. Marie, ON – March 2025 – This year, we proudly present Re-Emergence, a powerful celebration of the resilience, activism, and milestones within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Hosted at the Sault Ste. Marie Museum in partnership with Sault Pride and International Day of Pink, this event highlights pivotal moments in history while honouring the ongoing fight for justice, inclusion, and representation.

Honouring Two-Spirit Identity: A Landmark Moment

As part of this year’s celebration, we recognize the creation of the first-ever Two-Spirit Pride Flag, designed by renowned artist Patrick Hunter to mark the 35th anniversary of the term "Two-Spirit." This landmark moment underscores the importance of visibility and cultural pride for Two-Spirit individuals within the broader LGBTQ+ community.

The flag’s design carries profound symbolism: two stylized eagle feathers represent the balance of masculine and feminine energies, resting on giizis (the sun) to signify the boundless nature of our spirits. As Patrick Hunter explains, “We walk Turtle Island with these two perspectives at all times, and if they are in harmony, we can achieve anything.”

Hunter’s artistic vision embodies resilience, interconnectedness, and the rich cultural heritage of Indigenous peoples. “Science tells us that we’re all made from star stuff, as old as the universe,” he reflects. “We’re here to add our own verse to the cosmic poem.”

A Night of Reflection and Creativity

The Re-Emergence Tour recognizes key milestones in 2SLGBTQIA+ history, including:

  • The LGBT Purge – 35 Years Later: Honoring Michelle Douglas’s 1990 challenge to discriminatory military policies, the 2016 class-action lawsuit, and the ongoing fight for justice.

  • Two-Spirit Communities: Marking 35 years since the adoption of the term Two-Spirit, 10 years since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Final Report, and 5 years since the Final Report on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit Peoples.

Event Details:

Sault Ste. Marie Museum (690 Queen Street East, Sault Ste. Marie, ON)
6:30 PM
Featuring Patrick Hunter for a Paint Night
Tickets: $40 (Cost-accessible tickets available via ssmpride@gmail.com)

Amanda Zuke, Chair of Sault Pride, emphasizes the event’s significance: “Re-Emergence is not just about remembering history—it’s about actively shaping a future where all 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals feel seen, valued, and empowered.”

Nicole Curry, Collections Assistant at Sault Ste. Marie Museum, adds: “We are honoured to host this important event, providing a space to celebrate Two-Spirit and 2SLGBTQIA+ stories through art, activism, and history.”

Join Us in Celebration

The Re-Emergence Tour is an opportunity to come together, reflect on the past, and build a more inclusive future. Through art, storytelling, and community, we honour those who paved the way and inspire the next generation of activists.

------------------------------------------

Distinguished by its virtuosity, probing musical insight, and impassioned, fiery performances, the Ariel Quartet has garnered critical praise worldwide for more than twenty years. Formed when the members were just teenagers studying at the Jerusalem Academy Middle School of Music and Dance in Israel, the Ariel was named a recipient of the prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award, granted by Chamber Music America in recognition of artistic achievement and career support. Celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2023, the Quartet serves as the Faculty Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), where they direct the chamber music program and present a concert series in addition to maintaining a busy touring schedule in the United States and abroad.

Recent highlights include the Ariel Quartet’s sold-out Carnegie Hall debut, a series of performances at Lincoln Center together with pianist Inon Barnatan and the Mark Morris Dance Group, as well as the release of a Brahms and Bartók album for Avie Records. In 2020, the Ariel gave the U.S. premiere of the Quintet for Piano and Strings by Daniil Trifonov, with the composer as pianist for the Linton Chamber Music Series in Cincinnati.

The Quartet has dedicated much of its artistic energy and musical prowess to the groundbreaking Beethoven quartets and has performed the complete Beethoven cycle on six occasions throughout the United States and Europe. The Ariel Quartet regularly collaborates with today’s eminent and rising young musicians and ensembles, including pianist Orion Weiss, cellist Paul Katz, and the American, Pacifica, and Jerusalem String Quartets. The Quartet has toured with cellist Alisa Weilerstein and performed frequently with pianists Jeremy Denk and Menahem Pressler. In addition, the Ariel served as Quartet-in-Residence for the Steans Music Institute at the Ravinia Festival, the Yellow Barn Music Festival, and the Perlman Music Program, as well as the Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence at the Caramoor Festival.

Formerly the resident ensemble of the Professional String Quartet Training Program at the New England Conservatory, from which the players obtained their undergraduate and graduate degrees, the Ariel was mentored extensively by acclaimed string quartet giants Walter Levin and Paul Katz. It has won numerous international prizes in addition to the Cleveland Quartet Award: First Prize at the prestigious Franz Schubert and Modern Music Competition in Graz/Austria, Grand Prize at the 2006 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the Székely Prize for the performance of Bartók’s String Quartet No. 4, and Third Prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition. About its performances at the Banff competition, the American Record Guide described the group as “a consummate ensemble gifted with utter musicality and remarkable interpretive power” and noted, in particular, their playing of Beethoven’s monumental Quartet in A minor, Op. 132, as “the pinnacle of the competition.”

The Ariel Quartet has received significant support from the American-Israel Cultural Foundation, Dov and Rachel Gottesman, and the Legacy Heritage Fund. Most recently, they were awarded a grant from the A.N. and Pearl G. Barnett Family Foundation.

“Algoma University Fine Arts Department is excited to announce the launch of its newest Group Exhibition ROYGBIV VIBGYOR. While discussing themes and concepts related to each artists individual works, a common element that arose was the juxtaposition of Black and White and Colour. From there, the theme of how we remember and recognize colours emerged. Western Culture uses the acronym ROYGBIV to remember and codify the colours of the rainbow, while VIBGYOR is the acronym used in Eastern Cultures. So come down to the Sault Ste. Join Anne-Marie and Sean for our NEXT Sound Bath event at The Healing Loft, 719 Queen Street East in Sault Canada on Monday, March 17, 2025 at 7pm ET.

A Sound Bath event is a relaxing, rejuvenating and immersive experience where participants are bathed in the soothing sounds of various instruments to promote relaxation.

The pure vibrations of crystal bowls are believed to promote energy flow and balance within the body, fostering a sense of well-being. Exposure to specific frequencies and vibrations can positively impact physical, emotional, and mental health. Potential benefits include stress reduction, improved sleep, enhanced focus, and a sense of inner peace.

This is a deeply relaxing, live music event. A meditative journey. An immersion into sound and vibrational healing.

During this experience, participants lie down in a comfortable position on a yoga mat. The yoga mat, bolster and blanket are provided for your comfort. You may bring a pillow for added comfort if you would like. We use the sounds of crystal singing bowls, Tibetan bowls, the native flute and more to invite healing, self-discovery, and rejuvenating effects.

In addition, Anne-Marie administers Reiki and Healing Touch to each participant to add to the experience.
